A vibrant, colorful neon-lit cityscape with Asian-inspired signage and architecture, including a large animated figure wearing traditional robes and a headdress, skyscrapers, and various illuminated neon signs in Chinese characters and English, depicting a lively urban scene at night.

As a street art lover, you have surely heard of Alexandre Farto, aka Vhils. But did you know that in the mid-2010s, he actually called Hong Kong home, with a studio in the industrial neighbourhood of Wong Chuk Hang?

Stories from the Street

Street art mural of a young woman with short hair, detailed with black and white dashes and shading, on a textured wall with pipes in front.

During his residency, Vhils didn’t just decorate walls; he carved into them, drilling through layers of history to reveal the portraits hidden beneath the surface.

For his work on a moving 'Ding Ding' tram, he adapted this signature style by peeling away and carving into thick layers of posters to create striking, textured portraits.

Street scene in Hong Kong featuring large posters with digital art of faces, a public bank sign, and a green sign with Chinese characters, with pedestrians walking along the sidewalk.

He also experimented with neon for the first time, collaborating with local neon master Frank Sin, whose team translated Vhils' raw, etched aesthetic into stunning, glowing installations. In 2016, his landmark exhibition “Debris – Hong Kong”—curated by the HOCA Foundation—took over the rooftop of Central Ferry Pier 4. The show featured around 20 new works created with materials sourced mainly in our 852, with the artist himself sometimes even on hand to guide visitors through the immersive experience.

My obsession with the painted urban canvas began in Berlin and led to a mission documenting the ever-changing art on Hong Kong’s walls. This archive eventually became my book, Colourful Hong Kong - Street Art Stories.

With years spent embedded in the local street art scene and an interdisciplinary M.A. from Freie Universität Berlin, my real joy is sharing these stories in person. My walks move beyond the surface to offer a deep dive into the heritage, techniques, and "secret" corners that most people walk right past.

From the energy of Central to the creative lanes of Sheung Wan and Sai Ying Pun, I invite you to see the city through a fresh and entirely different lens
